Vipera renardi

Common name: the Eastern Steppe Viper

Conservation status: Vulnerable

Distribution: China, Kazakhstan, Kirgiziya, Mongolia, Russia, Tadzikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan

Size: up to 720 mm

Description: upperside is brownish-grey with a dark zigzag pattern on the back, underside is grey with light spots

Habitat: open meadows and hillsides in steppes, forest-steppes and semi-deserts

Activity: diurnal, nocturnal during hot summer months, hibernation occurs from October-November to March-April

Toxicity: venomous!!!

Diet: small vertebrates

Reproduction: ovoviviparous, breeding period occurs in April-May
