Description: upperside varies from light-grayish to light-brownish with large dark spots and small red points, underside is white-grayish; pupils of the eyes are vertical
Habitat: wide varity of habitats with friable soil, including coniferous, deciduous and mixed forests, groves, steppes, fields, meadows, sand dunes, heath land, gravel pits, parks and gardens.
Activity: nocturnal, hibernation occurs from September to March
Diet: various invertebrates
Reproduction: breeding period occurs in April-May; eggs are arranged in a thick cord up to 1 m in length
